Intensive farming is an activity where there can result in many environmental issues if no care is taken and if awareness in not high. At Switz Lanka we are committed to ensuring that our operations are as environmentally friendly as possible. Our concern for the environment is a fundamental issue and one which we take very seriously. Some of the important measures which we have under taken are:
Increasing Green Matter: In spite of having to cut down some trees on our land to build our poultry sheds and other buildings, we are proud to say that we have increased the total green matter on our land tremendously through program of Tree Planting.
Use of Recyclable Packaging: All our eggs are packed in recyclable paper pulp packaging. We produce our paper pulp packaging at our farm using waste paper. Our packs are 100% biodegradable and whatever trays we re-collect from our customers can also be re-used as an input in the packaging plant. Pulp packs are sun dried rather than using electric heating to save electricity.
Rain Water Harvesting: Water is a valuable resource, especially in the area where our farm is situated. We have embarked on a water conservation project where large ponds have been dug on the land. Soil from these excavations has been used to create a drainage system whereby rain water is drained into these ponds. The collected rain water is then treated and used as drinking water for the birds.
Energy Conservation: Our poultry sheds are designed for maximum natural ventilation so that fans or other artificial ventilation systems are minimized. Our paper pulp packaging uses sun drying in place of electrical heating to reduce electricity usage.
Reduction in use of Hazardous Materials: Materials which cannot be recycled or decomposed are not used in our farms. Our buildings do not contain any asbestos or other harmful materials that can affect the health of the people living and working on the premises.
Reduction in Soil Erosion: The farm land around the poultry operations is being developed with trees, water catchments, and drains to prevent soil erosion. We compost with plant residue and chicken manure, thus making the soil’s agricultural value better.
