Producing an egg is a complex process because to make it efficient it is necessary to produce large numbers economically and free of diseases. Laying hens, fed in intensive conditions, must get a nutritionally balanced diet, be vaccinated for potential disease threats, and the eggs should have clean and strong shells. Modern farming methods with quality housing and good feed are essential to achieve this.
Many consumers have doubts about what goes into feed for chickens. Through our packaging and labeling we aim to convey to our customers exactly what our feed contains. In addition, by having our farm accredited, we wish give assurances to our customers that our claims are valid that that we do not use any feed that could be harmful to consumers.
Our farm has been designed on 50 acres of land with optimum planning to improve bio-security. Our birds are reared in cages giving protection against Salmonella and other diseases. Water and feeding is delivered to the birds with minimum human contact, again assisting with prevention of spread of disease. Our farming systems are such that every egg we sell is traceable to the day of production, the batch of hens the egg was produced from, and the feed and raw materials used for production. All feed ingredients are sampled and retained for further investigation if needed.
As we produce our own feed, we have good control over raw material quality and what goes in to the feed.   The feed we use does not have anything that is harmful to the end consumer:
Farming Practices No Hormones
Hormones are banned in animal feed in Sri Lanka. Our Layer feed is registered under the Animal Feeds Act and complies with all conditions in the act.
No Antibiotic Growth Promoters
Many farms may use antibiotics in their feed for the purpose of promoting bird growth and in order to prevent incidence of diseases.  We at Switz Farm do not use any antibiotic growth promoters; instead we use safe, alternate products such as probiotics and organic acids to control disease.
